Local schoolchildren help pen new Christmas book

When award-winning children’s author Martyn Barr was planning his 11th book, he decided to enlist the help of Year 6 students from The Orchard School, Canterbury. He challenged the 10 and 11 year olds to come up with the plot for the book and the result is ‘St Nick in Neverland’.

The 20-page story and activity book was commissioned by Whitefriars as a gift for Santa to give away in this year’s Grotto, the third year in a row we have commissioned a Christmas story from Martyn.

The author presented signed copies of the book to each of the students on Thursday, 14 December and participated in a question and answer session with the children, who use five of Martyn’s educational books in the classroom. He was later joined by Peter Pan (David Ribi) and Wendy (Samantha Dorrance), cast members from The Marlowe Theatre pantomime, as an extra surprise for the class of eight.

‘St Nick in Neverland’ is beautifully illustrated by Herne Bay artist Graeme Henderson and is available for purchase online from www.ootbshop.co.uk for £2.99 including delivery.

The Orchard School is a Foundation Special School catering for 80 primary and secondary aged pupils who have behavioural and learning difficulties.
